What’s New at the WRLC

A message from the
President of the Board Of Directors

A message from the
Director Of Programming

Since the Winnipeg River Learning Centre hired the first coordinator in the fall of 2007, there have been well over three hundred students who have taken advantage of the course offerings. From Tapping Maple Trees to the Five Month RRC Electrical program and everything in between, by working together I believe we have met and exceeded our initial goals and objectives.

There are many people and organizations to thank for this success. The RRC – Gimli Campus and particularly Clayton Tompkins for his on going support and programming. Sunrise School Division who donated the space we needed to start out on this project and for now passing on facility ownership to us for $1.00 enabling the renovation project to proceed.

The Manitoba Model Forest with the assistance of it’s partners and board and particularly Manitoba Hydro for the annual financial support for operating this facility as well as programming support and rental income.

Winnipeg River Community Futures, particularly Mary Greber and Sharalyn Reitlo and their board, for their support through the Whiteshell Community Adjustment Fund which enabled us to begin this journey as well as develop our Electrical Lab. Sharalyn has assisted us throughout with our governance process and helped us to keep moving forward to our AGM today.

Black River First Nation who worked with us in the very beginning to access funds for the feasibility studies and continue to be one of our most supportive partners.

The RM of Alexander and the Town of Powerview/Pine Falls have played a very important role as the political power and will that make things happen as well as contributing funding to the renovation project. I would like to acknowledge both George Harbottle and Diane Dubé who served on the executive committee with myself and Charlie Black since we began and have been my strongest supporters through the ups and downs of this project.

There are so many people who have been a part of this process, our staff and teachers, the sponsors to our programs, Sagkeeng Education Authority, Sagkeeng Employment and Training Services, Manitoba Metis Federation, JUST Training, MB ED and Training, volunteers on committees, and many others. We thank you all for your contribution.

Funding and Development of the Carpentry Lab

I would invite all residents off North East Manitoba to review the information on this site an take some time to consider your personal skill development plans or needs, and how we might help you achieve your goals. Our facility has a state of the art Carpentry shop, an electrical training lab and fully equipped Nurse Training lab that we plan to rotate programs through depending on demand.

We are working hard to establish many partners in training to provide the widest possible menu of programs to make it possible for our residents to take skill training in our own region as opposed to commuting or relocating elsewhere.

We have long term established partnerships with Red River College (Gimli Campus) as well as the Manitoba Model forest.

We have recently partnered with the Academy of Learning (Steinbach) to open a fully equipped , computer based training facility on campus that can provide a wide range of certified training programs ,these programs will be offered shortly.

We are looking to partner with Red River College main campus to deliver a main campus program in Advance Business Application for Aboriginal students, and will be holding info sessions shortly to gauge interest.

We have entered into discussions with other training providers to expand our offerings in the trades And other skill areas as local demand warrants.

Our facility has over a dozen air conditioned class rooms suitable for any form of training from a 1 day meeting to programs lasting several months.

I encourage local organizations and businesses to contact me to discuss your training and employment needs , I am willing to source out any specialized training that may be required ,and assist you in seeking funding as required.

We hope to announce a number of new and exciting training opportunities in the coming year and I look forward to meeting you all , down at YOUR Learning Centre.

February 2010

The Winnipeg River Learning Centre has provided a range of programs, courses, and workshops designed to help local students starting on a new career or to move them along their current paths.

Red River College plays a key role in program delivery at the Winnipeg River Learning Centre. We have recently started our second Red River College – Gimli Campus Level One Electrical certificate program. We are proud of our first class of graduates who completed their training in December of 2009. The latest program got underway in January and will wrap up in June. A third offering of this Level One Apprenticeship program is scheduled for September 2010.

The Electrical Certificate program at WRLC was made possible through the generous financial support of Community Futures Winnipeg River and the Whiteshell Community Adjustment Fund. Their support made it possible to purchase all equipment, materials, and supplies required to start up this program.

Red River College – Gimli Campus also works with WRLC to deliver its Health Care Aide, its Human Resource Management, its Para-Educator, and a variety of small business and office management programs.

Non-Timber Forest Products workshops will be coming to the WRLC in May 2010, thanks to a programming partnership that includes the Manitoba Model Forest and Royal Roads University. Similar partnership initiatives are being developed such as bringing the Practical Nursing Diploma program to the WRLC from Assiniboine Community College .

In addition to all the WRLC activities in establishing a wider range of program and course options for students in the Winnipeg River Region, we also have been developing our organizational plans and structures. Facilitated by Community Futures, the WRLC Advisory Committee continues to hold meetings to develop a strong vision and plans to put down the foundation for a long term business plan.

The biggest news of this year has been the announcement by Minister Toews of $2.7 million along with provincial and Model Forest funding to retrofit and upgrade our current facilities in order to expand access to training programs. Work on these projects is set to begin this winter.
